Slow motion video is created by recording at a high frame rate and playing back at a lower standard rate. A video captured at 120 fps and played at 30 fps plays at one quarter speed, producing a 4x slow motion effect.
Standard playback is 24 to 30 fps. To achieve 2x slow motion, a source of at least 48 to 60 fps is needed. For extreme slow motion at 10x or more, cameras that capture 240 fps or higher are required.
Video shot at standard frame rates can be slowed using frame interpolation, where software estimates and inserts new frames between existing ones. The result is smoother than simply repeating frames but may show interpolation artifacts on fast motion.
