Frequently Asked Questions

Scientific notation expresses numbers as a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. For example, 4,500,000 is written as 4.5 times 10 to the power of 6.

Multiply the coefficients and add the exponents. For example, (3 x 10^4) times (2 x 10^3) equals 6 x 10^7. If the resulting coefficient is 10 or greater, adjust by increasing the exponent.

Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit remains to the left of it, and count the number of places moved to determine the exponent. Moving the decimal left produces a positive exponent; moving it right produces a negative exponent.
